Naturism and family holidays: how to travel with children as a naturist

A naturist vacation with children can be a safe and natural experience for the whole family. Get inspiration and advice for planning your naturist vacation.

Some people probably think that naturism is only for adults, but I don’t see it that way; it’s a lifestyle that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Many naturist destinations in Europe are also family-friendly, where children can play freely and safely in natural surroundings. But how do you do it in a way that feels natural and comfortable for both children and adults? In this guide, you’ll find tips for planning a successful naturist vacation with children.

Why go on a naturist vacation with children?

Naturism can be enjoyed in many ways. For me, it’s about having the freedom to take off my clothes when it’s hot and enjoy the freedom that comes with it. For others, it may be almost a religion. For many naturist families, it’s not just about being naked—it’s about freedom, body positivity, and a relaxed approach to life.

What can naturist vacations offer children?

  • A healthy relationship with their bodies – Children learn early on that all bodies are different and natural.
  • A safe and free upbringing – Naturist sites are often peaceful, child-friendly, and without the same focus on material things that tends to be found in more mainstream places.
  • The opportunity to be in contact with nature – Many naturist campsites and resorts are located in scenic areas where children can play freely.

Respect children’s boundaries and their premises

When choosing a naturist vacation as a family, it is important to remember that children have their own boundaries and needs. They should never be pressured, and it should be clear that they are always allowed to say no – both to naturist beaches and to being naked in common areas. It’s about safety and freedom – not coercion.

For us, it has always been the case that if our child does not want to go on a naturist vacation or to a naturist beach with us, then we don’t. You can always ask them why; maybe they don’t want to be naked, but are okay with you being naked.

We like the fact that the naturist places we visit as a family are family-oriented. For example, our favorite naturist campsite in Corsica writes about its “naturist dress code” on its website:

“At thenaturist holiday resort of Bagheera, we wish to encourage the practice of family-oriented, natural, healthy naturism. To do this, we ask that you respect the nudity code and, at the same time, show understanding towards the young and those who may be apprehensive of discovering naturism.”

This is something we value highly – respect for other people’s boundaries and the freedom to choose/opt out of naturism. Naturism is an individual and personal choice.

Benefits of going on a naturist vacation with children

A naturist vacation can give children experiences and values that they will carry with them throughout their lives. When clothes come off, so do some of the expectations and norms of everyday life – and this makes room for a more relaxed and natural way of being together as a family.

A natural relationship with the body

When children are allowed to experience nudity, such as on a naturist vacation, they gain a natural and relaxed insight into the fact that bodies come in all shapes and sizes – and that this is completely normal. There is nothing to hide or be perfect about. This can give them a sense of strength and security about their own bodies, which many children today find difficult to find in a world filled with ideals and comparisons from social media.

Less focus on consumption and appearance

Without clothes, there is no pressure to wear the right clothes. No expensive swimsuits, no comparing brands or trends. This provides a respite where children can just be children – without having to compare themselves to what others are wearing.

Stronger family ties

When the whole family is undressed, everyone is more equal – and this creates a special kind of togetherness. Many people find that conversations become more honest and more present when you let go of the outer layers.

Freedom and contact with nature

Naturist resorts and beaches are often located in scenic surroundings with plenty of space and tranquility. This allows children to run, play, and explore without restrictions. There is something very special about swimming naked in the sea, building sandcastles, or playing ball without wet swimwear that chafes.

A safe and respectful environment

Naturist environments are often characterized by a strong culture of respect—both for bodies, boundaries, and privacy. Children are met with kindness and openness, and they learn that nudity has nothing to do with sexuality, but is about freedom and authenticity.

How do you introduce children to naturism?

If you and your family already practice naturism at home, the transition to a naturist vacation will be natural. If it’s your first time, it may be a good idea to take it in small steps:

Talk openly about it – Explain to your children that there are places where people enjoy being naked together and that it is completely natural.

Start at home – If your children are not used to nudity at home, you can try being naked in private settings, such as in the garden or on the beach.

Show pictures of the destination – Many naturist resorts have family photos on their websites so that children can see that it is completely normal.

Generate interest – Tell them about the fun activities they can look forward to, such as beach trips, swimming, and playing in nature.

What should you pack for a naturist vacation with children?

Although clothing is not necessary most of the time, there are still things you should pack:

Sunscreen– Children’s skin is delicate, so choose a sunscreen with a high SPF, at least 30 according to recommendations from the Danish Health Authority. We recommend one that is even higher for children, and make sure to apply it often.

Bathing shoes – Many naturist beaches have rocks or stones.

Sun hat and sunglasses – Especially important for small children.

Water and snacks – Naturist sites are often a little out of the way, so bring provisions with you.

A few clothes for the evenings – When the sun goes down, it can get chilly.

Flip-flops or sandals – Good to have with you/on for the beach trip, as the sand can get incredibly hot in the sun and the ground can be uneven. They are easy to take on and off and protect your feet on the way to and from the water.

How do you deal with other people’s reactions?

If you are traveling with children as a naturist, you may encounter questions from others, especially from people who are unfamiliar with naturism. Here are some good answers:

“Isn’t it strange to take children on a naturist vacation?”

Naturism is about freedom and body positivity. At many naturist resorts or naturist beaches, families on the beach are completely normal, just as normal as on clothing-optional beaches.

“What if someone stares?”

Naturist resorts have clear rules about respect and behavior, and staring is not tolerated. This is something that is cherished and important to naturists, just as taking pictures at naturist resorts and beaches is not tolerated.

“How do you know it’s safe for children?”

Naturist resorts and beaches often have high security, and the atmosphere is family-friendly and inclusive.

Conclusion

A natural and safe form of vacation

Naturist vacations with children don’t have to be strange or difficult—quite the opposite. It can be a completely relaxed, safe, and mindful way to vacation as a family. When nudity becomes something natural and not something special, much of the pressure and expectations that can otherwise fill the air disappear – for both children and adults. And there is something liberating about being in nature, completely unfiltered, and just enjoying each other’s company in peace and freedom.
